Age groups, competition sections, repertoire requirements
Australian International Music Competition is divided into four age groups, two competitive sections and a number of instrumental categories.
‘Hitmaker’ Section
to encourage young upcoming talents
junior: 8 years & under
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 5 minutes in total
9 – 12 years old
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 8 – 10 minutes in total
13 – 18 years
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 10 – 12 minutes in total
senior: 19 – 24 years
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 12 – 15 minutes in total
Please note that this is a mixed instrumental section (piano, string and woodwind instruments).
‘Advanced’ Section
for professional young musicians
Junior: 8 years & under
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 5 minutes in total
9 – 12 years old
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 8 – 10 minutes in total
13 – 18 years
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 10 – 12 minutes in total
senior: 19 & over
Two contrasting pieces from two different musical periods – maximum of 12 – 15 minutes in total
Please note that the ‘Advanced’ section is divided into two separate instrumental groups: Piano and Strings. There is no woodwind instrumental group in this year’s edition of the ‘Advanced’ section of AIMC.
The same repertoire (two selected pieces) may be performed in every round of the competition.
Prepared pieces may be longer than the times indicated above but depending on the number of participants, the jury reserves the right to stop the performance if it is goes overtime.
Competition stages and application process
Australian International Music Competition will be conducted in three stages: ‘Preliminary audition video’, and Semi-final’ and ‘Final’ live performance rounds.
Stage one: Preliminary round – video application
1. Send us a link to a YouTube video presenting one of the pieces prepared for the competition. Recording can be done using a mobile phone in a quiet environment.
2. Email us your application form or use an online application of this website.
3. Pay an application fee.
After the Preliminary round is complete, participants will be informed of their acceptance to either ‘Hitmaker’ or ‘Advanced’ section of the competition.
Stage two: Semi-final round – live performance
1. The Semi-final round will take place on the 1st and 2nd of October, 2019. You will be notified about your scheduled live performance approximately 3 weeks before the event.
2. You will be asked to perform both pieces of your choice. Depending on the number of participants, jury reserves the right to stop the performance before it is complete.
3. Participants will be notified of their acceptance to the Final round on the evening of the 2nd October, 2019
Stage three: Final round – live performance
1. Final round will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of October 2019, between 10am and 2pm.
2. You will be asked to perform both pieces in their entirety.
